Gen Con

73 days until we make the pilgrimage to Indianapolis for GenCon. We have 2 rooms at the Fairfield Inn East. I looked at the True Dungeon feature event but there is very little room left to get in.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what will be there that wasn't at Origins. Wizards of the Coast and Fantasy Flight should have a huge presence. Hopefully there will be some newly released products that weren't available in Columbus.

I am planning on taking a cooler and a grill and saving some cash on the food bill. We will need to figure out who all is going and who is rooming with who if we need to keep the second room.

Looks like a good game for kids!

10 Days in the USA, part of Out of the Box games series, looks like it would be a pretty good game for kids to teach geography and some planning and communication skills to your elementary age kids. I have it on my list to pick up for my grand kids this summer.

I am definitely going to demo this at either Origins or GenCon.

Oh Chit!!

It has happened to all of us. We are playing some game and you need a marker for either a bad guy, or to designate an action. These are great. I picked up some last year at GenCon for a WWII game I bought. They make all kinds of markers so check them out. Plus, they have a really cool logo.

Pandemic

I am really looking forward to trying this one again. We played this one several times during King weekend and never could beat it. It is a very well designed game and is quite challenging. I'll bring it to the next gathering and we can try it again.

Cutthroat Caverns

It Looks like there are some serious expansion packs coming for Cutthroat Caverns. Smirk and Dagger Games

CUTTHROAT CAVERNS: RELICS and RUIN

EXPANSION PACK 2

We've changed things up a bit. The next release for Cutthroat Caverns will be RELICS and RUINS, a 'not to be missed' expansion that will greatly enhance gameplay and replayablity.

The big news is that the set will introduce a whole new mechanic to the game, an Event deck. Event cards are flopped with each Encounter and, if they activate, will make the Encounter you know so well a very different, more dangerous experience - or vastly more rewarding.

Sure, Spite can be a pain to deal with - but now try it with the walls closing in and reducing your hand size every turn. Or perhaps instead you'll encounter her in "a place of great evil" where the very location you fight in drains away your life as long as you remain in the room.

Of course, the rewards are greater too. Sure, you'll find the same potions in the deck - but now when you face Ashtongue the Cruel you may draw an event that gives a Relic of power to the person who played the most Action Cards in the final Round - or brave enough to pass their hand through magical flame to claim one.

Then there's the Relics themselves. Try on a Ring of Storing and be able to store an Action Card you play from your hand - for one more use. Let Vampiric Bracers gain you life as you beat down opponents - or give an Evil Eye to anyone to tries to do you harm in the party and thus return the favor.

Plus, in this set, we are delighted to announce the inclusion of some of our recent Create an Encounter contest winners, joined by our own devious new critters. All I can say is, if you ever thought the creatures weren't lethal enough - you needn't be concerned any more.

Cuthroat Caverns: Relics and Ruins will boast a lot of cool stuff you will not want to miss.

CUTTHROAT CAVERNS: TOMBS and TOMES

EXPANSION PACK 3

TOMBS and TOMES builds on the Event deck and provides new and powerful Relics as well as 15 very tough new creature Encounters - including a few more winning entries from the contest. As a BONUS, the new creatures will be introduced through two, one-shot adventure modules. Yep, full on, RPG style narratives with a complete story, multiple endings, choices to make, and bits of dungeon goodness above and beyond each Encounter you face.

Cutthroat Caverns has been called a diceless RPG - and the richness these modules add, proves the point. Of course, all the creatures you encounter drop right into the game after your one shot adventure is over - but when they do, they will mean that much more having experienced them in a story first. It is an awesome way to run through all the new stuff.

CUTTHROAT CAVERNS: FRESH MEAT

EXPANSION PACK 4

Fresh Meat is still underway, but a bit further off than anticipated. When it arrives, you can look forward to more unique, new creatures and more importantly - fresh-faced, new adventurers to kill steal them.

Plans call for additional new characters with built-in special abilities, varying life totals, different hand sizes (in short, characters that feel and play differently) and a few more cards for the Attack deck, Item deck and Action card deck to keep things interesting.

CUTTHROAT CAVERNS is a property we are taking very seriously, adding just what it needs to be the best it can be and avoiding those things that will bog it down. So take a look this Summer for the next two releases. You won't be disappointed.

Trust no one.

Trouble in Toy (and Game) Town

Looks like the struggling US economy is having a direct effect on toy manufacturers in China.

Declining U.S. orders already have contributed to the closure of at least 3,600 toy factories since the beginning of 2008, according to the Chinese government, leaving hundreds of thousands of Chinese workers suddenly out of work in this sector alone. Some of the shutdowns have triggered violent protests, a situation that could worsen if the Western recession drags on through 2009, as many economists are predicting.

The volume of Chinese toys passing through eight major U.S. ports was down 5.9 percent in the first nine months of this year, compared to the same period in 2007, according to economic forecaster IHS Global Insight, which tracks the information for the National Federation of Retailers. Toy traffic through the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif., which typically handle more than half of Santa’s incoming booty, declined 10.2 percent, as measured by tonnage.

Playing Gods anyone?

Check out this game.

It looks like something that might be pretty fun to try out

Any one played this?

A guy a work said he played this and it was a blast. He also said each game only takes about 30-45 minutes which is something we are always looking for. I might try to find a copy of it, unless one of you already has it.

A worthwhile cause

I ran across this group and it really seems like a worthy cause. They are called Games for Soldiers and they spend their time and resources getting games out to service men and women overseas. Check it out and if you think it is worthy make a donation. I sent them $10.00 to cover the cost of shipping a box of games over.

2008 Games of the Year

This list is courtesy of Games Magazine

This list is only for non electronic games. It looks like there are some pretty interesting games on there. We played Pandemic at GenCon and it was a pretty good team building type game. It would be good for Durwaine to play with his students at their game club. Anyone played any of these other ones?
