Memorial Day Weekend
Happy Memorial Day. Enjoy the day with family and friends. Picnic, cook out, party on. But take a moment to reflect on what this day means to you. Swing by a cemetery and pay respects to those loved ones who have gone before. In the Gettysburg Address it was said by President Lincoln that "We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate... we can not consecrate... we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. You are sitting in the Stag Horned Flagon, a tavern in the city of Amphail, enjoying doing nothing. You have just finished your first job as "professional" adventurers. The drinks are flowing freely and you are enjoying the best meal you have had in some time. You had left your homes in the Saltmarsh area when an opportunity availed itself to you. You made 3 gold pieces each fighting off a pack of wolves that had been attacking local farms. You performed well but luck played a bigger part of your mission than talent. None the less here you are. You have no jobs, no prospects and all you own is what you have in your pockets.
A very attractive server brings another round and with it your tab. "It is on the house tonight boys, courtesy of old Krivvin Shamblestar himself. There must be a little more to you than what the naked eye can see. Anyway, Krivven wants to see you in the back room for a minute. I told him you'd be there after you finish this round."
As you begin to discuss this very sudden turn of events an extremely brutish young man staggers to your table, directly to the largest one of you, slams his monstrous fist on the table and bellows "I challenge you to Shields!"

Angels and Demons
Ok so it wasn't that kind of movie. Another movie based on the works of Daniel Brown. The previous one was The DaVinci Code. Tom Hanks once again plays Robert Langdon who is a professor of Religious Symbology at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His specialities include classical iconology, symbols of pre-Christian culture, goddess art, and the decryption of ancient ciphers. You can read more about him here on his website.
I liked this movie but... I wish I had read the book. It seemed to be missing some of the intensity that the first one had. I wish they had given us a little more background on the Illuminati. I wish Langdon would have had to go through a few more steps before figuring stuff out. I wish they would have had a little more about the Vatican archives. The best part was probably Ewan McGregor's performance or the pretty cool bad guy. I give it almost 3 full Floyd's. Two and 27/32 Floyd's to be exact. Barely good, certainly not great, but go see it and tell me what you think.

It ain't your daddy's Star Trek
I went and saw the new Star Trek Saturday. Let me start by saying I am not now, nor ever have been, a Trekkie. But I always have enjoyed the various incarnations of the show, as well as the movies (even the bad ones). But I thought this movie rocked from start to finish. It is a prequel to what we know about the Enterprise and it's crew. I thought it was pretty awesome. The question movie goers have to ask is if it would be a good movie if you knew nothing about Star Trek. The answer is yes. Since I don't do spoiler things I'll stop there saying only that all the signature lines are worked in, the guy in Red gets whacked, and Uhura is hot (not as hot as her room mate but hot none the less) and I will go again with any of you guys. Go see it. Four plus Floyd's. Live long and prosper!

The Season of JonCon
As declared earlier tonight this, my friends, is the season of JonCon 2009. It has been so declared by the great Jon "Gygax Arneson" himself!! Let the movie going, the pigfests, game playing begin!! We will sing songs to Jon of JonCon legend and lore. Men everywhere should write and sing songs in his honor, build shrines and worship at the alter for this man. Truly, he is a saint among swine, and deserving of the highest accolades in the worlds beyond. It is 52 days away so don't wait to start the party!!!
Wolverine
I went and saw X-Men Origins: Wolverine this morning. Overall I liked it, but...
I will give this spoiler. See there was this big wave and... No just kidding. Do not get up and leave when the screen goes black, OR when the credits role.
This was one of the harder reviews for me. I really, really wanted to love this movie but (after Watchmen) was very apprehensive.
I thought they had changed a lot of things but wasn't 100 % sure. So when I got home I looked some stuff up and found out my memory wasn't quite as faulty as I thought. The biggest problem with this movie, to me, was the director seemed to get stuck on certain things and would not get off them. Like Wolverine looking skyward and screaming with great anguish. They really over did that. I had issue with some of the CGI scenes because they looked so bad (Think of the later Highlander Movies)
Hugh Jackman was good and I would love to see another film with Wolverine, only with better writing. I still think they could have done more with developing his character and background but maybe the will save it for a future movie.
Liev Schreiber was good as Victor/Sabertooth. He played him very dark. So much so it was like he reprises his role from Defiance and just changes costumes and sets.
Taylor Kitsch (Tim Riggins from Friday Night Lights) did a great job as Remy LeBeau/Gambit and I wouldn't mind seeing him make a reappearance in a future film. I know this was a background movie for Wolverine but Gambit needed a bigger role. Also, a little more background on him would have been great.
Ryan Reynolds (Definitely, Maybe, and Two guys, a girl, and a Pizza Place)showed a lot of potential as Wade Wilson (aka Deadpool). Too bad the writers didn't.
Overall it was enjoyable but frustrating. I will go see it again and hopefully will see it in a better light. I give it three Floyd's and say go see it soon.
