Buckeye Recap

The Bucks sloshed their way to an "unimpressive" (John Saunders ABC) 30-0 win on a really rainy day. The offense had 318 yards of total offense, 236 on the ground, as they totally controlled the line of scrimmage most of the day. Boom Herron scored a rushing touchdown for the eighth consecutive game.

Illinois couldn't get much going as the Bucks defense was smothering. The insane pressure forced Juice Williams into several mistakes and bad decisions and eventually out of the game.

It was the second straight shutout for OSU, the first time that has been accomplished since 1996, which limited Illinois to 170 total yards. The national media was so overwhelmed the Bucks will probably drop in the polls, again. Next up Indiana on the road. The Hoosiers looked pretty good against Michigan and got really hosed on a last drive call.

Buckeye Minutiae

The back-to-back shutouts are the first since 1996 when the Mike Vrabel, Luke Fickell, Shawn Springs and Andy Katzenmoyer led defense shut out Minnesota 45-0 and then Illinois 48-0. They next traveled to Indiana where they won 27-17. The last time they had 3 straight shutouts you ask? 1973 when they beat Northwestern (60-0), Illinois (30-0), Michigan State (35-0). That "D" was led by Randy Gradishar, Rick Middleton, Neal Colzie, Steve Luke and Tim Fox.

The kid got some more air time, standing near Tressel during part of the game and also on the the sidelines after Pryor scored and was getting congratulations from his team mates.

Saturday Link Dump or waiting on OSU to kick-off

I'm bored. Although UC is an entertaining team to watch, and I really want them to do well, I can't get into it. So I am looking up random crap on the 'net' and sharing it with who ever reads this blog.

Leading off -
The Top Ten most depressing characters in Comics. Interesting. Funny, tragic and all that crap.

Batting Second -
A Sherlock Holmes movie will be released on Christmas Day. It will star Robert Downey Jr as Holmes, Jude Law as Watson, and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler. I don't know how Downey will do as Holmes but it is really great to see him working hard in great roles on a consistent basis after so many years of fighting battles and demons. Preview here.

Batting Third -
MGM Studios is in trouble financially to the tune of 3.5 Billion dollars. Billion. With a "B".

"Sources" report that bankruptcy might be in the very near future. What does that mean to goofy nerds like us you might ask? The Hobbit (2011 release) and the next James Bond movie might be in trouble. I Wonder if Obama will help bail them out? Read more here, and here, and also here. Can anyone spare a quarter for a fellow American who is down on their luck?

Batting cleanup -

I thought this was pretty funny

Batting Fifth -

I thought this is pretty sad. When will America wake up?

Batting Sixth -

Random

Batting Seventh -
All you D&D rules guys try your hand at this

Batting Eighth -

This is one of my favorite bits ever.
This is good also.

Batting Ninth -

I am trying to put together a Civil War in Ohio tour that will feature buildings, cemeteries, monuments, homes and birthplaces. SO, if you know of a site go here and tell me about it.

Go Bucks!

The Book of Eli

I ran across an interesting looking movie that will be coming out on January 15, 2010. The Book of Eli is a futuristic, apocalyptic movie starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. You can check out the trailer here and read some more about it here. I think it will be worth a trip. Second trailer here.

Game Day

Here come Illinois and Juice Williams into the Shoe. I'm sure you remember the last time they were here and the stinging 28-21 loss when the Bucks were rated #1, the horrible call early in the game that allowed an Illini fumble. They bring a 1-1 record in with them that includes a 37-9 butt whuppin' at the hands of Missouri. That is the same Missouri team that lost Veteran QB Chase Daniel and sensational receiver/return man Jeremy Maclin to the NFL.

My Prediction
This isn't the same team and the Bucks should be able to put a pretty good beat down on them. The running game goes for over 250 and Pryor hits some big plays in the air and OSU rolls 35-17

How am I doing so far?

Game 1 Prediction Ohio State 31 Navy 17
Final OSU 31-27
Game 2 Prediction Ohio State 10 USC 35

Buckeye Recap

Bucks ground the Rockets 38-0. Pryor has one of his better games while at Ohio State. The "D" holds Toledo to 13 yards on the ground. Pryor has the fith highest game in terms of individual Total Offense in OSU history. All of this is good, right? So why am I not happy?

1.The running game. Herron and Saine frustrate me. Jordan Hall excites me. Jaamal Berry intrigues me. Any way it goes they must have more production from the running backs
2. Putting it in the tank early. I really think the Bucks offense needs some work so why shut it down early. Pryor should have thrown for over 300 in this game.
3. Pryor's passing form. At times he looks great. Usually those are when there is no pressure around him. He still throws off balance too much and his technique needs work. But he is still a diamond in the rough and give him more time and reps. I think you will forgot all about #10 when it is all said and done.

Ohio State came out aggressive throwing a 76 yard bomb on the third play. They jumped on Toledo early in the first quarter and it was just a matter of running out the clock after that. Saine and Hall had some nice runs but with the exception of Pryor the running game was overall lackluster. Hall looks like a guy that might be a big play guy in time and that is something OSU needs to loosen up defenses. I know they won big but they were supposed to.

Buckeye Minutiae
With 372 yards of total offense Pryor racks up the fifth highest single game total in Ohio State history. The others:

1. Art Schlicter 412 yards
2. Troy Smith 408 yards
3. Joe Germaine 388 yards
4. Troy Smith 386 yards
5. Terrelle Pryor 372 yards

Number 59 Watch
His Redshirt Season continues with no sightings, but with the horrible camera angles it would have been hard to see anyway.

Frequently* Asked Questions about International Talk Like A Pirate Day

*Revised to add questions which we've actually be asked, if not "frequently," at least "now and then."

Q. The big one: WHY?

A. Why not?

Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple. It adds a zest, a swagger, to your every day conversation. Do you need another reason?

Try it out. Let go, have a beer, burp in public. Say "Aarrr!!" Feels good, doesn't it?

Q. When is Talk Like A Pirate Day 2006 (2007, 2008, etc.)?

A. International Talk Like a Pirate Day isn't one o' those governmentally sanctioned holidays that shifts around to create a convenient three-day weekend. No, the date is ALWAYS Sept. 19 (Cap'n Slappy's ex-wife's birthday.) Now, occasionally Sept. 19 falls on a Sunday, and we recognize that may not meet everyone's desire for an excuse to party. While a lot of fun can be had ce;ebrating TLADP in a church setting (The choir will now sing, "How Great Thou Aaarrrrt!") we're suggesting that those of a more secular bent consider celebrating Talk Like A Pirate Weekend.

Q. What the heck is chum? And what's a chumbucket?

A. Chum is fish bait, usually blood, fish guts and skin chopped up and poured on the water to draw bigger fish. In his book, “Shark Trouble,” Peter Benchley refers to an old salt from Australia who used quartered horse carcasses to attract Great Whites. A chumbucket is the bucket which would hold the chum. No, people do not usually, willingly, knowingly consume chum. Such references in his column are one of Cap’n Slappy’s little jokes.

Why is Ol’ Chumbucket the nom de pirate of one of the Pirate Guys? John, who gave himself the nickname, likes to imagine his pirate alter ego as a failed ship’s cook who was given the sobriquet by a crew unhappy with the choice of entreés from the ship’s galley. Sometimes John wishes he'd given himself a more fierce pirate name, but most of the time he realizes this is about right.

Q. OK, settle this once and for all. Is it "Arrrrrrr," "Yarrrrr," "Yarrrrgh" or what?

A. Ol' Chumbucket has always held that the preferred exclamation be "Arrr!" and not, "Arrrgh!" because "Arrrgh!" is the sound one makes when one sits on a belayin' pin and no pirate would intentionally do that.

But the fact o' the matter is, thar be pirates what says, "Arrr!" AND pirates what says, "Arrrgh!" and thems what say, "Yarrr!" or even "Yarrrgh!" (Although "Yarrr!" tends to be a British variant and "Yarrgh" seems to be favored by the Dutch.)

But we don't care how ye say it! Your "Arrr!" should just come from yer heart and yer bowels and be a fully formed expression o' yer own Pirattitude!

Q. What does "savvy" mean?

A. Johnny Depp has a lot to answer for. For a time after the release of "Pirates of the Caribbean, this was among our most-frequently-asked questions.

The dictionary defines "savvy" as "wisdom, understanding." Used as a question,it can be taken to mean "get it?"

To help ye all remember, Cap'n Slappy has composed a little ditty:

It goes a little something like this:

S-is for the way you SASS my way!/ A-is for the ASS I kicked today!/ V and V-is VERY, VERY,/ stuck on how you're scary /Y-is for your YAP that's flappin'/ cuz ye won't shut yer trap and ...

SAVVY is just how bright you seem to me./ SAVVY an understanding wench, ye be. /Our love stands the measure /You know you're my buried treasure /SAVVY is why you've chosen me!

Q. How about "Shiver me timbers"?

A. When the wind blows hard on a wooden ship, the timbers literally rattle. This is a cause for surprise and concern ... therefore, "Shiver me timbers" is an expression of surprise.

Update: According to correspondent David Heizer: "To 'shiver' is defined by Merriam-Webster as, 'to break into many small pieces : shatter'. 'Tis not the mere rattlin' of the timbers in the wind that strikes terror into the heart of a pirate, but the full and catastrophic shiverin' (splinterin') of the mainmast (and other masts), whether by gale winds or cannon, which would leave him dead in the water and at the mercy of foe and starvation alike."

Q. Me wants to know ...

A. This qualifies as the Faux Pirate Usage That Most Often Drives Cap'n Slappy Nuts.( See question below).

T'quote the good Captain:

The use of "me" instead o' "I" when the personal pronoun is the subject o' the sentence would be more fittin' to Talk Like Thag the Caveman Day! "Me" doesn't have a "jolly ask of ye," - "I" do! Now, ye use the possessive form "me" instead o' "my" - which ye do just fine in "Catch me drift?" Which, of course, I don't.

Q. Have you heard the one about the pirate who walks into a bar ...

A. Yes.

As Cap'n Slappy says:

Thar be only three pirate jokes in the world. The biggest one is the one that ends with someone usin' "Arrr" in the punchline. Oh, sure, thar be plenty o' these, but they're all the same damn joke.

"What's the pirate movie rated? - Arrr!"
"What kind o' socks does a pirate wear? - Arrrrgyle!"
"What's the problem with the way a pirate speaks? - Arrrrticulation!"

...and so forth.

The second joke is the one wear the pirate walks into the bar with a ships wheel attached to the front o' his trousers. The bartender asks, "What the hell is that ships wheel for?" The pirate says, "I don't know, but it's drivin' me nuts!"

And finally. A little boy is trick or treatin' on Halloween by himself. He is dressed as a pirate. At one house, a friendly man asks him, "Where are your buccaneers?" The little boy responds, "On either side o' me 'buccan' head!"

And there ye have it. A symposium on pirate humor that'll last ye a lifetime - so long as life is violent and short.

And trust us, if you run into a fourth joke, we've heard that one, too. If ye think it's a real winner, then send it to PirateJokes.Com instead o' sendin' it to us.

Read more questions here.

Game Day

A road trip to play Toledo, in Cleveland, the week after USC could spell trouble for the Buckeyes. This might be one of those "trap" games you always hear about. Toledo is 1-1 so far this season but has been able to score lots of points. They lost 52-31 at Purdue in their opener and then beat Colorado 54-38 at home. I'm not sure what to make out of this game.

The bad news for the Bucks:
Toledo's offense has averaged 558.5 yards and 42.5 points per game

The good news for the Bucks:
Toledo's defense has given up 493 yards per game and 45 points per game. The Rockets allowed Purdue's Ralph Bolden to run for 234 yards.

What's that mean? I really don't know but the both teams will be jacked up to play in the Browns Stadium in front of a crazy crowd. Tressel said earlier in the week that the coaching "must grow" and I can only assume he will use Pryor's legs to a greater extent today.

My Prediction:

Pryor has a huge game (over 100 yards) on the ground. Boom Herron will run for a career high, posting the highest total by a Buckeye since Beanie Wells went for 222 (that means more than 168) against Michigan in 2007. I also look for Posey, Carter, and Ballard to each catch a TD pass. Look for the Bucks to have a huge game as The Sweater shows a little more passion than usual. Ohio State big in this one 45-17.

R.I.P. - Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze passed away today succumbing to Pancreatic Cancer, after a 20 month fight, at the age of 57. Lots of people swear they didn't like his movies but I bet you can quote them! Road House was my favorite followed by Ghost. I'll miss him.

Buckeye Recap - part two or I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore

One of these two coaches is a true visionary

I can really not remember being this mad at my Buckeyes before. They, they being Tressel, played that game not to lose, rather than playing to win.

Beginning in 2005 Ohio State made the commitment to step up the schedule adding national powers to the early season. Texas in 2005 and 2006, Washington in 2007, USC in 2008 and 2009, Miami in 2010 and 2011. It is time for the play calling and decision making people to step it up as well.

This should have happened a lot more:

So should have this. Their defense was soft down the middle:

Buckeye Recap

Here goes my rant. My prediction was 35-10 USC. I am glad it wasn't a rout but I almost wish now it was.

One word sums up Ohio State's 18-15 loss to the Trojans. Embarrassing. This was a game that the Buckeyes truly dominated save a drive at the end of each half. This was a game that the Buckeyes defense more than held their own with the vaunted USC offensive unit. And at the end it came down to coaching. And the Bucks came up, once again, woefully short.

The game came down, once again, to Tressel's never failing conservatism. And it is starting to get really annoying. When the game-winning drive started OSU had USC pinned deep, 2nd and 19 at their own 5. Ohio State made a decision to quit playing the aggressive style that had been working and go to a soft defense, dropping the linebackers and playing off of the receivers. This was the same mistake they made at the end of the first half which allowed the Trojans to drive 80 yards for a tying field goal. That first half drive was set up by a ridiculous 3 play 7 yard drive that consumed a whopping 54 seconds off the clock. After USC scored to go up 18-15 Ohio State saw a defense that blitzed and confused Pryor. What a concept.

The offensive line at times looked good but other times looked very inept. Boom Herron is not the answer at running back. He was slow to hit the open hole and never really put any fear in the defense. Saine was a non factor. I really would have liked to see Pryor run more. A quarterback sneak would be a great play but I sometimes think OSU believes their line can't get them a yard. They really need to work overtime on Pryor's throwing mechanics. He threw off balance and off the wrong foot several times.

Grade Card:
Offense D
Defense B
Special Teams A
Pre-Game Preparation B
In Game Coaching D-

As the game came down to crunch time my feeling could be described by one word. A word that millions of Buckeye fans know all too well. BOHICA; Bend over here it comes again. We all knew what was going to happen and it did. Later this week I'll post my top-ten list of BOHICA moments as a Buckeye Football fan.

I listened to his post game news conference and was disappointed. Disappointed that no reporter asked about the inexcusable three and out on OSU's last possession of the first half. USC had no time outs and he let them off the hook. I was dissapointed that Tressel didn't step up and say he blew it.

So after that I have decided that Saint Tressel is officially now being down graded to the same status as St. Nicholas, St. Christopher, and St. George. He has to start winning the big games right now. He must beat Penn State in Happy Valley this year. He must beat Michigan in Ann Arbor this year. He must win the Bowl Game after this season. There might be a BCS game after this season and if there is he must win it. The Miami Hurricanes are a home and home series starting next season. And in 2012 there are back-to-back home games against Cincinnati and Cal. I'm really not looking forward to any of those games.

Buckeye-Trojan Minutia
• USC leads the all-time series, 13-9-1 and has won the last seven. Ohio State's last win in the series was in the Rose Bowl following the 1973 season.

• Seven games in the all-time series have been decided by a touchdown or less.

• The home team has won 9 of 16 regular-season matchups.

• Ohio State is 44-18-2 against the Pac-10 Conference.

• Ohio State and USC played in front of 106,000-plus for the third time in the series history - the other two were Jan. 1, 1972 and Jan. 1, 1974, both in the Rose Bowl. It is the seventh time they have played in front of 100,000-plus.

Next week sees Ohio State going on the road to Cleveland where they will play a decent Toledo team. If they don't regroup and/or overlook this team they will get beat. I hope they pull it together. Go Bucks!!

Number 59 Watch

Had a pretty good night. Had a real good look at him running on the field as the Bucks took the field. During the pregame show he got about 15 seconds of air time during a blocking drill. He had a quick shot on camera during the game and then a real nice shot at the end when they were singing Carmen Ohio as a team.

Think Good Thoughts Tonight

Game Day

Here they come. The USC Trojans. As big an early season game as you find. They are big, bad, fast, unstoppable and any other cliche' or adjective you'd like to use. This year's USC Trojans are probable the best team in college football west of Gainsville. And that is with a true freshman quarterback. The Buckeyes will have to play a perfect game just to hang in until the end. I think our line gets manhandled and the running game gets stuffed. Look for our defense to be exposed to speed they won't see again this season.

Ohio State is playing for some national respect, not only for themselves but also for the Big 10. I give Tressel credit for scheduling these types of games but they really need to start winning some of them. This is like an old fashioned Rose Bowl!! As much as I hate to say it USC wins 35-10.

Go Bucks!

road trip?

I am going here next year. If I would have checked the Reds schedule I would have been there this year. A four day pass is $100.00. A Friday only pass is $35. Pretty reasonable I think. What say you men?

I love long week ends!!

Buckeye Recap

Well they survived. After trading scores early the Bucks seemingly figured it out and took control. Or so we thought. It looked like Tressel pulled the plug a little early and Navy came roaring back. Back to the point of attempting a game tying two point conversion with 2:23 to play. Then Brian Rolle stepped up, and in front of, the attempt and returned it 100 yards to give OSU a 4 pt lead. Whew. Bucks win 31-27. Rolle had 9 tackles. Pryor was ok and the running game was adequate. But everything needs to improve a whole bunch before next week's game with USC, who won today 56-3. Go Bucks!!

Game Day

Navy comes into today's game with an unproven offense led by Jr. QB Ricky Dobbs. He has said he would love to throw a lot more than Navy has in the past. Dobbs is a talented runner who could give the young Buckeye defense some problems. Seven defensive starters for OSU return but they will have to replace Jenkins, Freeman, Laurenitis.

The offensive line is unproven and no one is real sure how the defense will hold up against the nations number one ranked rushing attack in 2008 (for the fourth straight year). It is now for Pryor to step up and show why he was the number one recruit in the nation two years ago.
