Bowl Season Update

Right now it looks like the Bucks are leading the pack for the last at-large berth over Boise State, TCU, and Ball State. Since those three, and Utah, are from "non BCS confrences" by rule only one is guaranteed a BCS game. I would guess the Bucks are a slight favorite with their history and their unmatched traveling power. But I wouldn't be surprised, or upset, if an undefeated Boise State team got a game especially since they beat Oklahoma in their last BCS appearance two seasons ago. Maybe after this season they will end the automatic conference tie ins and just pick the 10 best teams. And yeah, I know they are co-champs but they are champs none the less.

OSU loses and that's a good thing

Oregon State lost to Oregon 65-38 tonight effectively ending the Beavers shot at the Rose Bowl. USC, who dismantled Notre Dame 38-3, will win the Pac 10 and the BCS berth if they can beat rival UCLA next week. I don't see any way that doesn't happen but upsets do happen.

With USC getting the automatic bid that would free up Ohio State for an at large berth probably playing in the Fiesta Bowl.

So the 10 teams that get BCS games look like this so far:

ACC Championship - Virginia Tech - Boston College winner
Big East - Cincinnati will be going to the Orange Bowl
SEC Championship - Florida - Alabama winner. My bet is the loser also gets a game as well.
Big 12 Championship - Missouri - Texas or Oklahoma. Missouri's opponent will be determined by the BSC poll which comes out in about 18 hours. I think it will be Oklahoma. And I think Oklahoma will spank Missouri so Texas will get a spot also.
Big 10 - Penn State going to the Rose Bowl
Pac 10 - USC going to the Rose Bowl, contingent on them beating UCLA next week.

That leaves 2 spots and Utah claims one of them. Since only two teams from any league can go that leaves Ohio State in pretty good shape. But should 12-0 Boise State get the bid I really couldn't complain much. The Buckeyes controlled their own destiny even after getting rolled by USC earlier in the season and blew it against Penn State.

BCS Craziness

Congrats to the Cincinnati Bearcats who will be going to a BCS Bowl for the first time in their history. The Bearcats won the Big East Title when Pitt upset West Virginia 19-15 in Pittsburgh. The Buckeyes are becoming more and more of a long shot to get a BCS game as the season winds down. They will need help from Oregon who plays Oregon State Saturday. If that happens USC wins the Pac 10 and will go to Pasadena to face Penn State in the Rose Bowl. That will leave a possible at large bid for Ohio State. Alabama and Florida will play in the SEC Championship game and the winner will advance to the Championship Game. The Big 12 is where the problem comes in to play. The current BCS standings look like this:

6 Conference Champs are locks, two of those spots are claimed; Penn State and Cincinnati. Utah will be in also. That leaves the only way for Ohio State to have a chance to get in is Oregon State must lose. Either way we will have an answer about OSU and the BCS by Sunday morning. For the record the Buckeyes are 4-2 in BCS games with both losses coming in Championship Games.

As we gather with our friends and families today around our tables let us not forget to take a moment and truly thank God for all we have in our lives. As we move from the feast table to the football games, movies and other activities take a moment and both publically and privately acknowledge all we have to be grateful for in each of our lives. The scriptures tell us that we should be “always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God.” As we move into the Holiday season it should be easier for us to focus on the many blessings each of us have in our lives and thank Almighty God for each and every one of them. Happy Giving Thanks Day!!

This Day in History

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs a bill officially establishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day.

The tradition of celebrating the holiday on Thursday dates back to the early history of the Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay colonies, when post-harvest holidays were celebrated on the weekday regularly set aside as "Lecture Day," a midweek church meeting where topical sermons were presented. A famous Thanksgiving observance occurred in the autumn of 1621, when Plymouth governor William Bradford invited local Indians to join the Pilgrims in a three-day festival held in gratitude for the bounty of the season.

Thanksgiving became an annual custom throughout New England in the 17th century, and in 1777 the Continental Congress declared the first national American Thanksgiving following the Patriot victory at Saratoga. In 1789, President George Washington became the first president to proclaim a Thanksgiving holiday, when, at the request of Congress, he proclaimed November 26, a Tuesday, as a day of national thanksgiving for the U.S. Constitution. However, it was not until 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving to fall on the last Thursday of November, that the modern holiday was celebrated nationally.

With a few deviations, Lincoln's precedent was followed annually by every subsequent president--until 1939. In 1939, Franklin D. Roosevelt departed from tradition by declaring November 23, the next to last Thursday that year, as Thanksgiving Day. Considerable controversy surrounded this deviation, and some Americans refused to honor Roosevelt's declaration. For the next two years, Roosevelt repeated the unpopular proclamation, but on November 26, 1941, he admitted his mistake and signed a bill into law officially making the fourth Thursday in November the national holiday of Thanksgiving Day.

Beanie is at 1,091 for the season with the Bowl game yet to play. He will end up as the 4th leading rusher in the history of Ohio State football. Congratulations to Chris Wells for an outstanding career at Ohio State and good luck in the pros. I really hope you'll come back but I understand if you don't.

Beanie was named to the All Big Ten Second Team Monday night behind Iowa's Shonn Greene and Michigan State's Javon Ringer. He was fifth in the league with 1091 yards despite missing 3 1/2 games with injuries behind:

Seriously?

Who are these Guys?

I turned on Ohio State's basketball game against BGSU and had to look up their roster. I'm not sure who these guys are.

There are no seniors on this team and only six juniors, only two of which played much at all last year. Only one remaining member of the Thad Five still on the roster; David Lighty. It will be a long year for these guys and old Thad has his work cut out for him to match last year's Twenty win season. My thought is they'll be lucky to win more than 16 games.

Post Michigan Game Thoughts

Michigan Still Sucks. And it really doesn't seem like it is getting any better for them either. But it is. That being said their offensive line should be better next year. Michigan always (until this season) has beasts up front but they will return 14 lineman from this years team. That is 14 guys with another year in the weight room and another year of Rich Rod's philosophy and schemes under their belts. If they can shore up that O Line that will at least get them to bowl eligibility status next season. Their Defense has been slow for several years so he is going to have to pay extra attention to that over the next few months. And their not-so-special teams are really, really bad. They will have to go through the offensive growing pains of a starting freshman QB in 09 but whichever one it is (Shavodrick Beaver or Tate Forcier) will automatically improve their offense. I'm leaning toward Forcier since he will be hitting Ann Arbor in January.

Note they only have 10 games scheduled at this point so I imagine they will find a couple of patsies to beat so they can finish 7-5.

I hate the waiting for over 30 days until the Bowl game for the Buckeyes but not much we can do about it except root very hard that Oregon State loses and the Bucks get a BCS at large shot. If that happens look for them to play the SEC championship game loser. If it doesn't happen then look to play Georgia in a New Year Day's Bowl.

Buckeye Recap

42-7. After leading only by 7 in a very strange first half the Buckeyes explode and just kick the crap out of Rich Rod and Michigan. Their coach sounds a wee bit like Cooper about this game and that bodes well for Ohio State. Next up for OSU is the waiting game to see if they can get a BCS game. Beanie goes for 130+ once again and we are left to wonder what if he had been healthy all season as well as will he return for a senior season.

This Day in History














On November 19, 1863, at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln delivers one of the most memorable speeches in American history. In just 272 words, Lincoln reminded a war-weary public why the Union had to fight, and win, the Civil War.

Lincoln got part of it wrong. The world does, and always will as long as the dream that is America stands, remember what was said at Gettysburg that day. And although Lincoln only spent 25 hours of his life in Gettysburg I sincerely doubt that any other day of his Presidency left such a mark on history.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground. Michigan Week



On this date in 2005, the Buckeyes trailed Michigan 21-19 with 47 seconds left. Troy Smith hit Anthony Gonzalez, who made a leaping catch at the four yard line. Two plays later Antonio Pittman scored and the Bucks went on to win 25-21. Troy completed 27 of 37 passes for 300 yards in the Buckeye Victory.

Michigan Week


On this date in 2006 number 1 Ohio State faced number 2 Michigan in Columbus. Both schools entered the game 11-0. Troy Smith was 29 for 41 with 316 passing yards and 4 touchdowns and Antonio Pittman carried the ball 18 times for 138 yards as the Bucks win 42-39 and advance to the National Championship Game. Smith became only the second OSU QB to win 3 consecutive games over the Wolverines. He became the Buckeyes first Heisman Trophy winner since Eddie George. Go Bucks!!!

Beanie Wells & The Quest for 1000



Beanie had a pretty good three quarters against Illinois gaining 144 yards icluding another highlight hurdle. He now is sitting at 957 for the season and is 5th all time for the Buckeyes. He also has gained 278 yards against Michigan which, I think, is third all time against Michigan by a Buckeye behind Archie Griffin (423 4 - games) and Jim Otis (401 - 3 games). It would be sweet to see him become the only Buckeye to have two Two Hundred yard games against Michigan. Buckeye Recap






The Buckeyes figuratively, and literally, ran over Illinois today 30-20. Chris "Beanie" Wells ran for 143 yards and Terrelle Pryor added 110 as the Bucks pounded the ball on the ground all day. Pryor only attempted 10 passes on a very cold and windy day. The offense was very vanilla as I am sure Tressel was saving some stuff for Michigan next week.

The defense was a little scary giving up 20 plays over 10 yards, 13 in the first half alone, as Illinois at times moved at will down the field. They did force several turnovers which led to scores so that is a plus. Hopefully they can get things tightened up before Saturday.

With the 143 yards today Wells goes to 957 for the season, 3,142 for his career and into 5th place on the all time OSU list behind Griffin, George, Spencer and Byers. Well done Beanie, well done.

Bond, James Bond














I went and saw the newest Bond movie, Quantum Of Solace, at the Arena Grand in Cbus. First of all, we need to make a group trip there. You can enjoy real food and beverages while watching the movie. Back to Bond.

While the Bond franchise has arguably one of the most, if not the most, recognizable theme songs in cinematic history it was barely heard throughout the movie. They also gave you a little more developmental history of the classic Bond drink. But again, you never hear the phrase "Shaken not stirred" spoken. For some reason I found this pretty interesting. I also never heard the classic Bond, James Bond line but maybe I missed it. Also, unlike the first movie with Craig, there is a scene reminiscent of the old campy bond chase scenes. Other than being a touch too long we can forgive it. This time.

Daniel Craig is further supplanting Sean Connery as the best Bond ever but I really think he needs to get at least one, if not two, more Bond adventurers under his belt before he can be known as the best Bond ever.

This movie, like the last, starts fast and hard and goes full tilt for almost the entire movie. There are a couple of slow spots but they don't detract too much from the action. The Bond girls were pretty hot but James wasn't very much of his usual horndog in this one. Olga Kurylenko is smoking hot in her role as Camille Montes and Gemma Arterton comes off pretty sexy as Strawberry Fields; yeah they went there. Watch for the scene where her real first name is used.

Craig, who has changed his appearance ten fold since becoming Bond, embarks on one hell of a revenge mission in this film. Quantum is pretty good, not as good as the last one but pretty good, and I think it is the 2nd best Bond ever. Go see it with a fellow adventurer. I give it 4 Floyd's.



Game Day



This will be a cold, good, hard fought game. It is the last game before Michigan Week and the Bucks need to come out with an impressive effort to climb up a place or two in the BCS standings. Terrelle Pryor needs to keep improving and can not, I say again CAN NOT, suffer a set back today against the Illini. I have no fear of Juice Williams and I really think last year was a fluke. I think Beanie gets a large number and the Bucks roll 28-10. Go Bucks!!

Veteran's Day























Please take a moment and reflect on all that has been given to us by those who have served the cause of freedom. If you have the time go to a cemetery and pay tribute to the veterans buried there. And if you do indeed go I would like you to think about the timeless words of General John Logan, written in orders to establish the observance of a National Memorial Day.

"What can aid more to assure this result than by cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foe? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their death a tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the Nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and found mourners. Beanie Wells & The Quest for 1000

With 140 yards against Northwestern Beanie is now at 814 for the season and 2,999 for his career. He is the number six all time rusher at Ohio State and will probably end his career as the number three or four. I'd love to see him shred Illinois for 186 to get to over the hump before the Michigan game. Maybe the Bucks will show some attitude against the Illini and inflict a little payback for last year's disaster in Columbus. I bet the officials will be quick to review anything close after costing Ohio State 7 points last year.

Buckeye Recap


Well the Buckeyes did roll. Behind Beanie Wells' 140 yards and Terrelle Pryor's maturation they win easily 45-10. Pryor looked good on some passes and rolled out effectively. The Buckeyes also converted a lot of 3rd and longs to take control of the game.

With the 140 yards Wells moved into 6th on the all time OSU list and next week against Illinois will become the sixth Buckeye to surpass the 3,000 yard rushing mark. Speaking of Illinois they got caught looking ahead to OSU and lost to Western Michigan 23-17.

Jim Tressel tied former coach Earle Bruce for third place on Ohio State's all-time wins list with 81. He also picked up his 50th Big Ten win with the victory Saturday. Bruce won his 50th game in 61 games and Tressel did so in 62.

With Penn State losing, to Iowa 24-23,the Bucks are now tied with Penn State and Michigan State for the lead in the Big Ten race. If Michigan State beats Penn State the tie breaker goes to the Bucks. If there is some weird alignment of cosmic forces of nature and all three end up tied Michigan State wins the tie breaker because they did not play a 1-AA team. So Tressel, quit scheduling your buddies from Youngstown State.

Ok Boys it is now officially that time. I think it is too early but what the heck who am I? Christmas time is here and we are about to be inundated with Holiday Music. So in keeping with society here is my first holiday entry.

Beanie Wells & The Quest for 1000


Going into the Northwestern Game Beanie is setting at 674 yards or 326 short of the 'magical' 1000 yard mark. With 4 games left this season he is currently at 2859 yards for his career. If he reaches it he will be joining the Top Five rushers in Ohio State History. It will be his 2nd 1000 yard season and should put him up to about 3200 yards for his career and will get him to about 4th behind:

Game Day



I fully expect Ohio State to come out and just punch Northwestern squarely in the chops. Look for the "O" line to emulate Texas Tech and be aggressive, and flat out mean. Bucks roll, flexing their collective muscles and running up the highest offensive numbers yet this season, blowing out the Mildcats 55-7. Go Bucks!

The Bucks must go undefeated in November to have a chance at a BCS Bowl game.

Adventurer Family Outing

I meant to do this in April or May but seeing how I was convalescing I didn't get around to it. My suggestion is simply this, and I know this goes against the grain by planning ahead, but how about a weekend trip with our families? My thought is to try to camp somewhere where the kids with us could play/swim. And maybe we could go somewhere where the wives/girlfriends could shop. Or maybe do a weekend around Renaissance Festival time like we did a couple of years ago. Also, we could get close to a golf course maybe we could have the inaugural Adventurers Golf Outing. And the invite would include single Adventurers like the Counselor Norwalk and The Sage of Southwood also. You get the general idea so what say you Men?

Something to do very soon

I was helping out the son of a co-worker who had to come up with a driving tour of Civil War sites in Central Ohio. He had to list at least 4 and they had to include a monument/statue, museum and cemetery. Listed below is my tour and it is something I want to take a day off work and go do before the weather turns.

We start at Blue & Gray Magazine Headquarters on Norton Road. A nice little place they also have a pretty good selection of books and magazines on sale.

We then head to Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery where 2260 P.O.W.'s were buried. Then it is on to Greenlawn Cemetery where numerous Generals and Medal of Honor recipients are buried.

Then it is up to the State House to see some great statues and while there to go inside the Rotunda. After that it off to the Ohio Historical Center and their Civil War display. If time permits we'll check out the research library.

We then head southeast to Groveport and Mott's Military museum. The largest privately run museum in Ohio house artifacts from all American Wars and has a pretty cool section on Ohio's role in the Civil War.

Now we come to the real driving segment. We go to Newark to see the statue of the drummer Boy of Shiloh Johnny Clem. Then to Somerset and the only Civil War Equine statue in Ohio of Phil Sheridan. Next down to Lancaster and the Sherman House and Statue. Then down to Forest Cemetery in Chillicothe where several Generals and Ohio Founding fathers are buried.

Overall it would be a pretty full day, about 9 hours, but should be pretty fun. Any one interested? What say you men?

Bad Joke of the Week

So a pirate walks into a bar, okay, and swaggers up to the barkeep and demands a glass of rum. I believe his exact words were "Your rum or your life, dog, what'll it be?".

And so the bartender, being a reasonable fellow, makes no complaint but simply grabs a large glass, a bottle of fine dark rum, and begins to pour. And while he's waiting for the glass to fill (this being, as I said before, a large glass) he sizes up the pirate, having never seen a real honest-to-God pirate before.

This pirate is in full pirate gear. Gold earrings, patch over the eye, a big filthy white blouse covering his swarthy chest, tattoos everywhere, all of it. But protruding from his pirate trousers is the unmistakable form of a steering wheel.

Well, the bartender sees that the glass of rum is just about topped off, so he passes the glass across the bar to the pirate, who nods curtly and takes a huge swig of the rum. Slapping a dubloon on the bartop, he turns to walk away, when our bartender's curiousity gets the best of him.

"Wait, one second. What's up with the steering wheel?"

And the pirate turns back and fixes him with a beady glare from his lone eye. "Arrr, I don't know, but it's drivin' me nuts!"

Crichton's Timeline ends

Author Michael Crichton passed away suddenly Tuesday November 4th, 2008. He was the author of several books including Timeline, Eaters of the Dead, and Jurassic Park. His last work will be published next spring. Adventurers everywhere will mourn the passing of the guy who gave us hours of entertainment both from the printed word and the silver screen. Rest in Peace fellow Adventurer

Election Day is over!!!


America has a new President elect. The winds of change are a coming. We shall see where the next two years take us. Obama will have a pretty good majority in both chambers to do what ever he wants so we shall see if all the good things he promised happen.

This Day in History


November 4, 1948


On this day in 1948, T.S. Eliot wins the Nobel Prize in literature, for his profound effect on the direction of modern poetry.

Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a long-established family. His grandfather had founded Washington University in St. Louis, his father was a businessman, and his mother was involved in local charities. Eliot took an undergraduate degree at Harvard, studied at the Sorbonne, returned to Harvard to learn Sanskrit, and then studied at Oxford. He became lifelong friends with fellow poet Ezra Pound and later moved permanently to England. In 1915, he married Vivian Haigh-Wood, but the marriage was unhappy, partly due to her mental instability. She died in an institution in 1947.

Eliot began working at Lloyd's Bank in 1917, writing reviews and essays on the side. He founded a critical quarterly, Criterion, and quietly developed a new style of poetry. His first major work, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, was published in 1917 and hailed as the invention of a new kind of poetry. His long, fragmented images and use of blank verse influenced nearly all future poets, as did his masterpiece The Waste Land, published in Criterion and the American review Dial in 1922. While Eliot is best known for revolutionizing modern poetry, his literary criticism and plays were also successful.

Eliot lectured in the United States frequently in the 1930s and 40s, a time when his own worldview was undergoing rapid change as he converted to Christianity. In 1957, he married his assistant, Valerie Fletcher. He died in 1965.

I can't believe I just turned 50. At least that what my newly issued driver's license says. Of course I really shouldn't complain. Actually, after this past year, I am very grateful and appreciative to turn anything, let alone 50. And to be friends with you guys. Even The Hairy One.

Buckeye Recap - mid season grade card

This season was looked at in three equal parts; USC, Penn State, and Michigan/Bowl game. Now I am not looking past Illinois because they are a very real threat to Ohio State but the Bucks should beat them.

Part 1 F++

USC kicked our ass in every imaginable facet of the game. But if Beanie had been healthy it would have at least been a game. I think.

part 2 F+

A slight improvement but they still lost a game the should have won. No where to go but up.

part 3 ??

they should pound Northwestern, struggle at Illinois but win and then who knows against what will be a very desperate Michigan team.

breakdown:

Defense B+

they have been mostly good enough. But not nearly enough big plays and take aways.

Offense D

3 games without a touchdown pretty much tells you all you need to know

Special Teams B

They have been pretty good with some big returns, Trapasso kicking well and not allowing too many long returns against them.

Coaching D


In the past the Vest has been better with less. I'm not sure what the problem is. Maybe losing a lot of assistants over the years is taking a toll of Tressel. What ever it is the offense has been more than vanilla. They need to use the talents and skill sets they have on the team. Let Pryor roll out, work on his throwing and get the ball up field occasionally to back the defense off the line and give Beanie some room to work with.

Overall Grade C

They could go 10-2 and we will all be left wondering "What If?" Of course, we are OSU fans so we always wonder what if.

Bad Big 10 losses

Michigan goes down to Purdue 48-42 when Purdue scores on a 26 yard hook and lateral play with 33 seconds left. Michigan will not be going bowling for the first time in 33 seasons. That makes them even more dangerous when they come to Columbus on November 22.


Michigan State comes from way back to win 25-24 over Wisconsin. Wisconsin made some horrible decisions down the stretch in not running down the play clock on their last drive giving the Spartans at least 24 more seconds and taking a time out as MSU was struggling trying to scramble on the field to attempt the winning kick.














And in a game that helps the Buckeyes chances in making the Rose Bowl Minnesota throws a pick 6 with 12 seconds remaining and loses to Northwestern 24-17.

This looks cool


The Medieval Feasts take place in the 15th century gothic splendor of Trinity Cathedral, where you'll enjoy a night replete with period food, drink, music and entertainment. In 2008 we'll celebrate Christmas Eve with Eleanor of Acquitaine and Henry II.

This is held at Trinity Cathedral, which is located at the corner of East 22nd Street and Euclid Avenue, in downtown Cleveland. It is $48 per person, unless we can get eight guys to go and then we save $3 per person. This is held on Dec 5/6 and 12/13. I can not go on the 6th. What say you men?
