R.I.P. - Patrick Swayze


Patrick Swayze passed away today succumbing to Pancreatic Cancer, after a 20 month fight, at the age of 57. Lots of people swear they didn't like his movies but I bet you can quote them! Road House was my favorite followed by Ghost. I'll miss him.

Buckeye Recap - part two or I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore

I can really not remember being this mad at my Buckeyes before. They, they being Tressel, played that game not to lose, rather than playing to win.

Beginning in 2005 Ohio State made the commitment to step up the schedule adding national powers to the early season. Texas in 2005 and 2006, Washington in 2007, USC in 2008 and 2009, Miami in 2010 and 2011. It is time for the play calling and decision making people to step it up as well.

Here goes my rant. My prediction was 35-10 USC. I am glad it wasn't a rout but I almost wish now it was.

One word sums up Ohio State's 18-15 loss to the Trojans. Embarrassing. This was a game that the Buckeyes truly dominated save a drive at the end of each half. This was a game that the Buckeyes defense more than held their own with the vaunted USC offensive unit. And at the end it came down to coaching. And the Bucks came up, once again, woefully short.

The game came down, once again, to Tressel's never failing conservatism. And it is starting to get really annoying. When the game-winning drive started OSU had USC pinned deep, 2nd and 19 at their own 5. Ohio State made a decision to quit playing the aggressive style that had been working and go to a soft defense, dropping the linebackers and playing off of the receivers. This was the same mistake they made at the end of the first half which allowed the Trojans to drive 80 yards for a tying field goal. That first half drive was set up by a ridiculous 3 play 7 yard drive that consumed a whopping 54 seconds off the clock. After USC scored to go up 18-15 Ohio State saw a defense that blitzed and confused Pryor. What a concept.

The offensive line at times looked good but other times looked very inept. Boom Herron is not the answer at running back. He was slow to hit the open hole and never really put any fear in the defense. Saine was a non factor. I really would have liked to see Pryor run more. A quarterback sneak would be a great play but I sometimes think OSU believes their line can't get them a yard. They really need to work overtime on Pryor's throwing mechanics. He threw off balance and off the wrong foot several times.

As the game came down to crunch time my feeling could be described by one word. A word that millions of Buckeye fans know all too well. BOHICA; Bend over here it comes again. We all knew what was going to happen and it did. Later this week I'll post my top-ten list of BOHICA moments as a Buckeye Football fan.

I listened to his post game news conference and was disappointed. Disappointed that no reporter asked about the inexcusable three and out on OSU's last possession of the first half. USC had no time outs and he let them off the hook. I was dissapointed that Tressel didn't step up and say he blew it.

So after that I have decided that Saint Tressel is officially now being down graded to the same status as St. Nicholas, St. Christopher, and St. George. He has to start winning the big games right now. He must beat Penn State in Happy Valley this year. He must beat Michigan in Ann Arbor this year. He must win the Bowl Game after this season. There might be a BCS game after this season and if there is he must win it. The Miami Hurricanes are a home and home series starting next season. And in 2012 there are back-to-back home games against Cincinnati and Cal. I'm really not looking forward to any of those games.

• USC leads the all-time series, 13-9-1 and has won the last seven. Ohio State's last win in the series was in the Rose Bowl following the 1973 season.

• Seven games in the all-time series have been decided by a touchdown or less.

• The home team has won 9 of 16 regular-season matchups.

• Ohio State is 44-18-2 against the Pac-10 Conference.

• Ohio State and USC played in front of 106,000-plus for the third time in the series history - the other two were Jan. 1, 1972 and Jan. 1, 1974, both in the Rose Bowl. It is the seventh time they have played in front of 100,000-plus.

Next week sees Ohio State going on the road to Cleveland where they will play a decent Toledo team. If they don't regroup and/or overlook this team they will get beat. I hope they pull it together. Go Bucks!!

Number 59 Watch

Had a pretty good night. Had a real good look at him running on the field as the Bucks took the field. During the pregame show he got about 15 seconds of air time during a blocking drill. He had a quick shot on camera during the game and then a real nice shot at the end when they were singing Carmen Ohio as a team.

Think Good Thoughts Tonight

Here they come. The USC Trojans. As big an early season game as you find. They are big, bad, fast, unstoppable and any other cliche' or adjective you'd like to use. This year's USC Trojans are probable the best team in college football west of Gainsville. And that is with a true freshman quarterback. The Buckeyes will have to play a perfect game just to hang in until the end. I think our line gets manhandled and the running game gets stuffed. Look for our defense to be exposed to speed they won't see again this season.

Ohio State is playing for some national respect, not only for themselves but also for the Big 10. I give Tressel credit for scheduling these types of games but they really need to start winning some of them. This is like an old fashioned Rose Bowl!! As much as I hate to say it USC wins 35-10.

Buckeye Recap


Well they survived. After trading scores early the Bucks seemingly figured it out and took control. Or so we thought. It looked like Tressel pulled the plug a little early and Navy came roaring back. Back to the point of attempting a game tying two point conversion with 2:23 to play. Then Brian Rolle stepped up, and in front of, the attempt and returned it 100 yards to give OSU a 4 pt lead. Whew. Bucks win 31-27. Rolle had 9 tackles. Pryor was ok and the running game was adequate. But everything needs to improve a whole bunch before next week's game with USC, who won today 56-3. Go Bucks!!

#59 watch:
Dressed, did not play. Showed some smarts as to where to stand to make it on TV.

Game Day



Navy comes into today's game with an unproven offense led by Jr. QB Ricky Dobbs. He has said he would love to throw a lot more than Navy has in the past. Dobbs is a talented runner who could give the young Buckeye defense some problems. Seven defensive starters for OSU return but they will have to replace Jenkins, Freeman, Laurenitis.

The offensive line is unproven and no one is real sure how the defense will hold up against the nations number one ranked rushing attack in 2008 (for the fourth straight year). It is now for Pryor to step up and show why he was the number one recruit in the nation two years ago.

It is never too early to start planning. Especially for our group. Anyway next year's Con is August 5-8. That means we might get the Hairy One to make an appearance. I'll be heading back on Friday because the Dublin Irish Festival starts that night and it is a family tradition for us. But that will be a truly great week!!!

Tower of Gygax


We did this last year and it was a good time.

The idea of the Tower is that it plucks rooms from many worlds - every world that Gygax's work has helped inspire. As such, it is not a traditional dungeon, but rather a constantly-changing labyrinth of rooms. There's no knowing where you'll end up when you make it out of your current room; the question is how far you can get, how long you'll survive, and if you can at least die gloriously!”

The Tower of Gygax was one of many events last year at Gen Con Indy 2008 to honor the memory of Gary Gygax. Keith Baker put it all together with the goal of having a continuous game of AD&D 1st edition (Old School baby!) running all through the Con – 80 hours straight. A lot of people last year volunteered to help with this charitable event, either by writing up rooms (which is available as a PDF now), DMing one or more shifts or helping organize at Gen Con, or both. There was a great response both from professional designers and people who simply love the game, and it’s our hope that we can expand upon and improve it even more this year.

We can always use more rooms, and we’d certainly love to find more people willing to take on DMing sessions or helping organize the event. Some of the interesting changes made (and still being made!) based on feedback, is the event is going to be generics only for limited lives and not limited to 1 or 2 hours slots as before. We’ll have a constantly rotating table of players so more can join in on the fun. We wanted more people to be able to reminisce or experience for the first time the great gift that Gary helped bring about and so many remember with fond memories.

Fall Outing?

This fall marks the 20th Anniversary of the Ohio Renaissance Festival. It runs on weekends from September 5- October 25. I was trying to figure out when would be a good week end to go for me and was wondering if we could make it a big outing? My schedule will be based on the Ohio State home schedule. The Buckeyes are home on:

Saturday September 5 they open with Navy at the 'Shoe. I will be at that game after a full morning of tailgating so this one is out for me.

Saturday September 12 they play USC at 8:00 PM. This might be a possibility.

Saturday September 19 they play Toledo in Cleveland. I have a feeling that the boys up North might be heading to Browns Stadium for this one.

Saturday September 26 they play Illinois at a time to be determined. This might work.

Saturday October 10 they host Wisconsin time to be determined.


Saturday October 24
they play Minnesota at noon.

Another possibility is the Great Lakes Medieval Faire in Rock Creek Ohio. It runs from July 11 - August 16. I would be up for checking this out too but it would almost have to be on a Sunday.

Future GenCon Shows

I know our group isn't much into planning ahead but I thought I'd post this anyway. It looks like GenCon will be held a little earlier in the coming years. Here are the future dates:

Gen Con has been in Indianapolis since 2003 and has signed a five-year extension with the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association (ICVA) for 2011-2015. Below are the upcoming show dates.

* August 16-19, 2012
* August 15-18, 2013
* August 14-17, 2014
* July 30 - August 2, 2015

These shows will all be held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Public Enemies



I went and saw Public Enemy this morning. Starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale I was expecting great things I left a little disappointed. I thought the movie was a little slow in a lot of places. The movie jumped around to a lot of different locales with little warning and unless you knew the Hotel Congress was in Arizona, or caught the Hialeah sign in the background you would not have thought Florida at that moment. I also struggled with some of the historical things in the movie like the World Series game on the radio in one scene would have been played in 1932 and I got the impression from the film that it was much closer to the time of Dillinger's death. Also, I thought the FDIC sign in one bank was a little out of time but I may be wrong on that matter. But the weapons, cars and clothes were spot on and quite an addition to the flavor of the movie.

The soundtrack was outstanding with Diane Krall leading the way. They featured some period pieces, some retro stuff and some new music written for the movie.

So was some of the cinematography. Some of the scenery was outstanding and the shootout scene at Little Bohemia was incredible, probably the best ever in a gangster movie. Very Saving Private Ryanish.

Overall it was good, not great but good. I'd say go see it. But don't let your date wear red, especially since they don't either. Two Floyd's (and Boy they aren't pretty) and a bit.

39 days to Indy (See the nice new countdown timer?) and I was thinking that maybe we could go catch a movie Wednesday evening if anyone is up for it. This starts the week end before we get there. What say you men?

As we celebrate this weekend let us never forget the debt we owe those who have not only gone before but those yet to come. We owe it to them to live live well, and to make sure that America continues to stand for the ideals that the Founding Fathers laid out so eloquently for us for future generations.

So as we gather for cook outs, picnics, ball games and fireworks let us pause to reflect on what it means to live in the greatest country in the history of the world. God Bless America.

I am looking forward to GenCon this year and hope we have a good turnout this year. I'm going to try to preview it once a week until it gets here. It looks like there will be a lot of the larger game companies represented. Z-Man Games, Smirk and Dagger, and Green Ronin to name a few will be there.
